We’re honored and delighted you’re here.

Legend goes that long ago during a harsh winter, a Cree medicine man and his people were facing starvation. Food was scarce, and their survival depended on finding help or guidance. The medicine man, seeking spiritual aid, journeyed along the South Saskatchewan River.

There—near where present-day Medicine Hat, Alberta stands—he encountered a sacred spirit (often said to be a giant serpent or river guardian). In exchange for his courage and devotion, the spirit gifted him a special headdress or "medicine hat" — a powerful symbol granting him wisdom and the ability to lead his people out of hardship. This hat became a sacred object, representing vision, strength, and the bridge between the physical and spirit worlds.

A Medicine Hat horse has a white body with color only on its ears and top of the head — resembling a headdress or hat. These horses were considered sacred by many Indigenous peoples, often believed to protect their riders in battle and to possess special powers, much like the legendary medicine man’s own spiritual gifts.

The efforts of The Medicine Hat are focused on supporting animal rescue and the humans inspired and touched by it.  There are more sustainable ways to participate in supporting our communities.  There are many more sustainable ways of learning how to midwife ourselves through this wild gift we call life. May it be of benefit.

  • We focus on healing practices and experiences to empower human beings through the transformational practices of Breathwork, EFT and Yoga Nidra. Private and group experiences are available online and in person.

  • Horses have been a vital part of humanity’s evolution for thousands of years. Throughout history, the horse has been an essential aspect of more advances in humanity’s pursuits than any other species. They have been deeply interwoven with humans in relationship, in agriculture, hunting, allies in battle and war, and greatly responsible for the expansion of borders and territories since the domestication of the first horse. In honor of the spirit of horse and their service of the heart, the Medicine Hat promotes the conservation, rescue, rehabilitation and well-being of horses. Through awareness of the importance of the horse, we aim to amplify their true service of the heart, offer teachings of the Wisdom of the Horse, and highlight Rescues as the Resources they are for humans healing as well as the creatures they serve.

  • When service becomes a way we regularly connect with our communities and ourselves, we discover a way to activate one’s own heart. This activation amplifies the benefits of our heart aligned actions in the world around us. Service itself is a healer. Step forth in your own and witness the miraculous.

"Healing is an art. It takes time, it takes practice. It takes love."

The seed.

The sprout.

The garden.

The seed for The Medicine Hat came forth in May 2021 when I first began learning about horse rescue and why it’s now a necessity. I stumbled upon a mare in an auction house in Texas whose soft eyes inspired me to nearly purchase her after only watching one video of her being offered for sale. There is no memory I have in which I wasn’t in love with animals. They represented a consciousness unadulterated, and I have always been drawn to their wild and their true. I grew up with horses. They have been some of my greatest teachers, and when I saw this mare in a video, I immediately felt it was time to bring horses back into my life in some way, and do what I can to help. That mare was bought by someone whose journey has inspired me greatly, and the horse herself was a Medicine Hat mare. She inspired this whole adventure to come to life. If you feel inspired to join us in the rescue and the longterm care of these majestic animals, you are welcome to donate here.
